PG *samjaną. Related to the adjective ON samr (PG *samaz) “same,” Latin similis “similar”; the ON adjective gave rise to OE same, ME sāme, MnE same. Variant participial forms samiðr, sǫmuð, samit. The whole preterite system (in variant forms) coincides with that of sama 3 “suit.”
