Related to the adverb ON saman, OE (to)samne, ME sā̆men, Dutch samen, German (zu)sammen “together” and the Latin adjective similis “resembling.” Related also to the verb ON samna 2 “gather,” OE samnian 2, Dutch (ver)zamelen, German sammeln. Lexical variants include sóma, sœma; inflected variants include the preterite samdi. The whole preterite system (in variant forms) coincides with that of semja 1 “put together.”
