Sense “light, kindle”: derived from the noun PG *ailidaz, ON eldr, OE ǣled, rare ME ēld “fire.” Sense “grow old”: PG *aldijaną, OE yldan 1 “delay”; derived from the root of the adjective PG *aldaz “grown up,” OE eald, ME ōlde, MnE old, Dutch oud, German alt, which also gave rise to Dutch verouderen, German altern “grow old.” A class VIIc strong verb alda is attested as a participial adjective aldinn “old” only.
