PG swaipan. Cognate with OE swāpan VII, ME swōpen, MnE swoop; the ME form also developed into ME swẹ̄pen, MnE sweep, whether or not with interference from ON svipa 2 “swoop; whip”. Related to the noun svipa “whip”, in turn cognate with Dutch zweep “whip”. Fragmentarily attested; more commonly found as class 2 weak. The pattern of conjugation is unique: the preterite forms are consistent with the first conjugation, but the attested present-tense and participial forms are not.
