PG *haitaną, OE hātan VII, ME hōten, eMnE hight, Dutch heten, German heißen. In the sense “be called,” the present indicative conjugates like that of a class 3 or long-stemmed class 1 weak verb: heiti, heitir. The form ek heiti is considered a relic of an IE passive or middle voice. The present subjunctive, plural indicative, and imperative forms coincide with those of heita 1 “heat; brew.”
